Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” is a popular Christmas story about a reindeer born with a red nose, who becomes Santa Claus’ lead reindeer and lights the way for the team through foul weather.

The lyrics to the song are as follows:

Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer
had a very shiny nose.
And if you ever saw him,
you would even say it glows.

All of the other reindeer
used to laugh and call him names.
They never let poor Rudolph
join in any reindeer games.
Then one foggy Christmas Eve
Santa came to say:
“Rudolph with your nose so bright,
won’t you guide my sleigh tonight?”

Then all the reindeer loved him
as they shouted out with glee,
Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer,
you’ll go down in history!

The song was originally a poem created by Robert L. May in 1939 as part of his employment with Montgomery Ward.  May was supposed to produce a poem that could be given away to children by the store’s Santa Claus.  The poem was a great success and later was recorded by Gene Autry in a song composed by Johnny Marks.

In 1964 NBC aired the story as a television special in stop motion animation, produced by Rankin-Bass.  CBS has aired the show since 1972.  This special added some new characters to the story, such as Hermey the Misfit Elf, Clarice, and Yukon Cornelius.  Also, the island of misfit toys was a concept that added even more depth to the story.

In 1979, Rudolph was turned into a feature length film, Rudolph and Frosty’s Christmas in July.  Probably not a great idea.
